TISSUE
According to an autopsy in 1961
by a scientist in Ireland, elephants don't have a pleural space, (a cavity in
the lungs), between their lung and chest wall. Elephant's pleural space is
filled with connective tissue. That means their lungs are attached directly to
their diaphragm and chest wall. This gives them something like a vacuum pressure
to suck water up their trunk when they drink.
The ligamentum
nuchae is a band of elastic tissue that connects the skull to the vertabrae. The
elephant's ligamentum nuchae is the thickest and strongest known in the animal
kingdom.
